Mandatory Competencies

Maintenance of knowledge and skills in performing clinical procedures is essential.

We require all nurses to have completed the following mandatory competencies

Drug Calculations
Basic Life Support
Manual Handling
Fire and Safety

If you are finding it difficult to attend a Manual Handling or Fire and Safety inservice contact us.

NT Medic Healthcare Agency has Self Directed Learning Packages in both Manual Handling and Fire and Safety. These packages have been endorsed by the Australian Royal College of Nursing.

You can complete your Basic Life Support training with:
- St Johns Ambulance or

- Red Cross

You are responsible for observing safety in the interest of yourself and others. Please ensure that during your Placement you comply with the Health Services Policies and Procedures relating to Occupational Health, Safety and Risk Management.

Incidents
If you are involved in a work related incident, accident, complaint or dispute please notify your Nurse Manager immediately and contact NT Medic Healthcare Agency within 24 hours and supply us with a copy of any related documentation e.g. incident report.

Nurses on the NT Medic Healthcare Agency payroll are covered by our Workers Compensation Insurance and should an injury occur we need to be notified within 24 hours. If you are being paid by the Hospital or Health Service then you are covered by their Workers Compensation Insurance. However, NT Medic Nursing Agency would appreciate notification of ALL injuries within 24 hours.

Hazards
Report any hazards or safety concerns to the Nurse in Charge/Manager. Manual Handling - apply the techniques & equipment in the workplace where practicable. Where it is not possible to apply the techniques or utilise the equipment seek advice from the Nurse in Charge/Manager.
Attend available training programs in manual handling

Infection Control
Observe universal precautions. Gloves should be used whenever you anticipate contact with blood and body fluids; gloves are changed and hands washed between clients and for the same client when different
procedures will be performed. Wear further protective equipment and clothing such as goggles, mask and gown where appropriate. Place all sharps in sharps containers & do not recap needles.

Equipment & Machines
Some equipment & machines may be new to you. Do not operate any piece of equipment unless you are competent in its use. If you require instruction inform the Nurse in Charge.

Fire Safety & Evacuation
When you arrive at a new facility familiarise yourself with the emergency manual, fire extinguishers and emergency exits.

Security
Take care of your personal security especially if working alone, familiarise yourself with the facilities security plans. Take the time to consult Co-workers and /or the locals regarding the Community and any safety issues. Take care of your personal belongings such as wallets, bags & purses whilst on
shift. Mobile phones should not be carried whilst working on shift.

Smoking
To protect the health of employees, all temporary staff on assignment for NT Medic Healthcare Agency abide by the smoking or non-smoking policy of the client to whom they have been assigned.

Grievance or harassment
If you have a complaint, grievance, are being bullied or harassed please notify us, we will inform you of the correct proceedure and process to follow.

Code of Conduct
The Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council (ANMC) facilitates National Standards for Statutory Nurse Regulatory Authorities. These define the minimum core competencies and expected standard of behaviour/conduct of all nurses.

Inclusive of these are:
ANMC National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse and EnrolledNurse
ANMC Codes of Ethics for Nurses in Australia
ANMC Codes of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia

1. Practice in a safe and competent manner.
2. Practice in accordance with the agreed standards of the profession.
3. Not bring discredit upon the reputation of the nursing profession.
4. Practice in accordance with laws relevant to the nurse's area of practice.
5. Respect the dignity, culture, values and beliefs of an individual and any significant other person.
6. Support the health, well being and informed decision-making of an individual.
7. Promote and preserve the trust that is inherent in the privileged relationship between a nurse and an individual, and respect both the person and property of that individual.
8. Treat any personal information obtained in a professional capacity as confidential.
9. Refrain from engaging in exploitation, misinformation and misrepresentation in regard to health care products and nursing services.
